Summary

A career in law involves advising and providing solutions on various legal issues ranging from disputes regarding marriage, child, property, criminal offences to the rights of the individual. With the changing social and economic scenario and the expanding regulatory role by the government there has been a rise in the demand for lawyers. As a lawyer one would be required to advise clients/ organisation /government about their legal rights, help in the preparation of legal documents, wills and contracts, hold negotiations on various matters, and represent them in court proceedings.

All in all, in the words of Thomas Jefferson “The study of the law is useful in a variety of points of view. It qualifies a man to be useful to himself, to his neighbors, and to the public”.

How to build on the subject

The school curriculum offers legal studies as a subject in class 11 and 12. The students interested in exploring law can opt for the course as it will provide exposure on various aspects of law and help them to form an understanding of the bedrock concepts related to law. Those who are further curious to explore this domain can watch law related movies (like Erin Brockovich, Miracle On 34th Street, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Verdict etc.) or legal/courtroom dramas to have an idea and feel about the profession. Reading books related to legal issues would also help the student to gauge his/her interest in the law field. During this course the students will also discover that a career in law is just not confined to courtroom and legal proceedings, a lawyer is required in other settings too such as corporate houses, government agencies, administrative services etc.

Job profile

In today’s modern world the role of a lawyer has completely evolved. As law caters to the needs of various fields, it has opened an array of options for law graduates. One gets an opportunity to work in NGOs, Civil Society Organisation, as a teacher or researcher, in publishing houses, as a reporter, judicial officer, in law firms etc. The profession requires you to-

  •   Interpret laws and rulings

  •   Conduct legal research

  •   Manage regulatory and compliance-related services

  • Provide solutions to the problems of the clients.

  • Offer legal representation to clients/organizations/government agencies in court proceedings on civil or criminal matters

Competencies required

  • Good Communication Skills: Oral and written communication skills are pivotal as one would require it on a daily basis while arguing a case in court, negotiating settlements, drafting letters and legal documents etc.

  • Love for Reading: One must be fond of reading as they will need to do a fair bit of research to keep them upgraded with the knowledge of current developments in local, national and world business.

  • Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving: One need to look at matters objectively and come to your own conclusions. They are frequently required to think out of the box to get the client’s job done.

  • Personality Traits: One should be a good listener, confident speaker not  scared to voice his/her opinion, a team person, skilful at managing time and data to succeed in various facets of this profession.

Career Opportunities in Law

  1. Corporate Lawyer: They help companies in complying with the rules and regulations of their industry. The professionals can do so either by being a part of the organization or can open a law firm and counsel different corporate companies.

  2. Litigation Analyst: They assist legal teams and lawyers in performing research, gathering evidence, and preparing legal documents.

  3. Judicial Services: After completing LLB, one can become Magistrate, District and Session Judge, or a Public Prosecutor after clearing the competitive examinations.

  4. Criminal Lawyer: They are responsible for representing their clients in court for criminal cases which includes a wide range of lawsuits like domestic abuse, sexual assaults, money laundering, corruption etc.

  5. Legal Advisor: They are lawyers employed by the government or private organizations to provide legal advice and services to the organization and its employees.

  6. Civil Lawyer: Civil lawyers handle disputes that come under civil law. Civil law is applicable to issues related to property disputes, family disputes, torts etc.

  7. Legal Journalism: Legal Journalists are equipped to attend court hearings and share legal knowledge with the public. They write articles for publications that could be online (blog, website, etc.) as well as offline (newspaper, magazine, etc.) 

Admissions and Entrance Exams

A student can take up any subject of his/her liking in high school and after class 12 he/she is eligible to take admission and pursue under graduation in any college of India offering a Bachelor’s degree in any stream of their preference. A bachelor’s degree of 3 years duration enables one to pursue LL.B. The student can further gain specialization by doing Masters in Law (LL.M.)

Alternatively, the student can opt for integrated B.A./B.Sc./BBA/B.com +LL.B. 5 years program after completing class 12 and can further follow it with LL.M.

Furthermore, the students could also pursue a 5 years integrated LL.B. and LL.M course.

Law graduate is required to do an internship under a law firm or senior advocate. After that one is required to enroll himself/herself with the State Bar Council. Further one has to clear the exam conducted by Bar Council of India to obtain the certificate of practice which makes you eligible to practice law.

How to prepare for the entrance exam

The admission in most of the colleges and universities require the students to crack the entrance exam (CLAT, AILET, DU-LLB) while a few colleges accept admission through university-specific entrance exams (IPU CET, AMU, KIITEE, Symbiosis Entrance Test, BUU etc.)

  1. CLAT

The Common Law Admission Test is a national exam administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities. This entrance exam is held for admission to 22 National Legal Universities in India’s U.G., P.G., Integrated law programs. It is conducted online and the medium of instruction is English.

There is no age limit in appearing for CLAT nor is any restriction on the number of attempts.

UG CLAT exam pattern and syllabus

The UG CLAT syllabus comprises five sections – English language, current affairs, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and quantitative techniques.

The exam consists of 150 objective-type questions. Each carrying one mark, while for an incorrect answer 0.25 marks is deducted. The duration of the examination is 2 hours.

 PG CLAT exam pattern and syllabus

At the PG level CLAT LLM syllabus includes major subjects of LL.B. The exam consists of only one section consisting of 120 objective questions each carrying 1 mark while for every incorrect answer 0.25 marks are deducted. 60 questions are from Constitutional Law while other 60 questions are from other law subjects. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. It is conducted online and the medium of instruction is English.

CLAT Counselling

Candidates who qualify the exam are eligible for CLAT counselling which is conducted in online mode to get selected for the final admission.

  1. AILET

All India Law Entrance Test is conducted by National Law University, Delhi for admissions to BA LLB, LLM and PhD programmes at NLU Delhi only.

There is no age limit for appearing in AILET nor is any restriction on the number of attempts.

UG AILET exam pattern and syllabus

The UG AILET syllabus comprises three sections- English Language, Current Affairs and Logical Reasoning with 50, 30 and 70 questions to be asked from each section respectively. The exam consists of 150 objective-type questions. Each carrying one mark, while for an incorrect answer 0.25 marks is deducted. The duration of the examination is 90 minutes. It is conducted in offline mode and the language of instruction is English.

PG AILET exam pattern and syllabus

The AILET for LLM program will have 2 sections. Section A will have 100 objective-type questions and section B comprises 8-10 descriptive questions out of which a candidate has to answer any 2. The duration of the exam is 90 minutes. It is conducted in offline mode and the language of instruction is English.

The section A consists of two parts: Part 1 comprises English Language consisting of 50 questions carrying 1 mark each. Part 2 comprises Logical Reasoning consisting of 50 questions carrying 1 mark each.

In Section A for every wrong answer 0.25 Marks will be deducted.

Section B is of subjective nature having 8-10 questions from different branches of law. The candidates are required to answer only 2 of them each carrying 25 marks. There is no provision of negative marking in Section B.

AILET Counselling

Candidates who qualify the exam are eligible for AILET counselling which is conducted in online mode to get selected for the final admission.

The AILET counselling process includes online registration, document submission by the students and document verification.

  1. DU LLB EXAM

National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the DU LLB and LLM entrance exam for admission to three-year LLB courses and 1 year LLM course offered at Campus Law Centre, Law Centre-I and Law Centre-II of Delhi University.

DU LL.B. exam pattern and syllabus

DU LLB exam comprises 4 sections- General Knowledge, English Language, Analytical Abilities and Legal Awareness and Aptitude. The Exam is conducted online in English language with a total of 100 objective-type questions; 25 from each section. For each correct answer 4 marks are awarded and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. The duration of the exam is 2 hours.

DU LL.M. exam pattern and syllabus

DU LLM exam will be a 2 hour online exam conducted in English language. The exam consists of 100 objective-type questions, for each correct answer 4 marks are awarded and 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. The objective questions are drawn from various areas of the LLB syllabus.

DU Counselling

Candidates who qualify the exam are eligible for counselling which is conducted in online mode by the Delhi University to get selected for the final admission.

Do I need to take coaching for cracking entrance exams?

Students who are willing to appear for LL.B./LL.M. entrance exam; coaching will provide them a higher rate of success. Opting for offline or online coaching enhances your chances of performing better. It, ultimately, makes you ready for the exam in a specific way. If a student has sound knowledge of the pattern and syllabus of the examination, then he/she can devise a strategic plan to prepare for it.
