Why Ashoka?

Ashoka is a liberal arts and sciences university in Sonipat, about an hour from Delhi, and one of the most sought-after undergraduate choices in the country. Here’s what makes a seat there worth working for.

01

Explore before you choose

Try courses across the humanities, sciences and social sciences before you pick a major. Economics with philosophy, or computer science with psychology, are both on the table.

04

Life beyond lectures

A fully residential campus with student-run clubs, societies and fests, so there’s always something to join or start.

02

Learn how to think first

Foundation Courses in your early semesters build the reading, writing and reasoning that every majorrelies on.

05

A wider world

Study-abroad and summer programmes with partner universities, and graduates who go on to top graduate schools, research, policy and business.

03

Seminar-style classrooms

Small, discussion-led classes taught by faculty who have studied and taught at leading universities around the world.

06

Financial aid for those who need it

Need-based financial aid helps admitted students take up their place, so fees don’t have to be the deciding factor.

What it takes to get in

There’s no cut-off to clear and no single score that decides it. Ashoka reads your application as a whole: your academics, your assessment, your writing, your interview and what you do with your time.

The essentials

What every applicant needs, what’s optional, and what depends on the major you’re leaning towards.

Class 10, 11 and 12 marks

Your school record from Class 10 onwards, with predicted or final Class 12 results. Ashoka considers all recognised boards, including CBSE, ISC, IB, Cambridge and state boards, and doesn’t publish a minimum percentage.

Ashoka Aptitude Assessment

A test of problem-solving, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning, taken in your round’s assessment window. There’s no syllabus to memorise, but practice makes a real difference.

Interview

A conversation with the admissions team about your interests, your application and the way you think.

Essays

Short written responses, in your own voice, submitted through the application portal.

SAT or ACT

Not required. A strong score can add weight to your application, but you can apply without one.

Class 12 Mathematics

Leaning towards Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics? Expect to need Maths in Class 12.

What Ashoka values, but rarely spells out

None of this is on the application form. Much of it shows up in the strongest applications we’ve seen.

Curiosity nobody assigned you.

What do you read, watch or argue about when there’s no grade attached? Your essays and interview should make that obvious without you having to say it.

Reasons that only fit Ashoka.

“The best liberal arts university in India” isn’t a reason. The specific courses, people and ideas you want to explore are.

Comfort with not knowing yet.

Liberal arts is built for people who are still exploring. Not having a major in mind is fine, as long as you can show how you’re exploring.

Changing your mind for good reasons.

Holding a view, hearing out the other side and updating it with evidence is what Ashoka classrooms run on.

A voice that sounds like you.

Readers can tell when an essay has been polished by an adult. Honest and a little rough beats perfect and generic.

What you’ll bring to campus.

Ashoka is building a community, not just a class. Show what you’d start, join or change once you’re there.
